The Cold War Polio Epidemic: Select Integration in the Time of Jim Crow

The Cold War Polio Epidemic: Select Integration in the Time of Jim Crow is a paper exhibit about the integration of Greensboro and Texan hospitals during the 1948 – 1960s polio epidemic that swept across America every summer. These acts of integration took place before the Civil Rights Movement, and the need for integration differed per city.

My development goals are to make contact with African American and white polio epidemic survivors in Greensboro to keep uncovering the reality of integration. Ultimately I wish to strengthen the Greensboro Historical Museum’s current exhibition of the polio epidemic, or create a full temporary exhibit in their changing gallery. I am also interested in revising the exhibit into a website.
